Hail to the SEA LEEKS – ALLIUM AMPELOPRASUM
Sea leeks are, in our humble opinion, probably the best winter veg to be foraged and they are just starting. For those who have never tried them, they have the most fantastic garlic and mustard flavour profile. Oh Yes! You really need to try them!!
They are gaining in popularity and you are likely going to find them more and more on the menus of fine dining restaurants !
Sea leeks are not as common here as they are in the continent, where it is believed they originate (more specifically around the Mediterranean region). The best places to find them in the UK are on the South West Coast but you can even find scattered spots elsewhere, even in Scotland.
They are so called “Sea” leeks as one tends to find them along the coastline. In truth, they are well adapted to sandy soil so you still can find them inland providing the soil is sandy.
Just now they are still quite small, up to 50cm high and they could potentially get confused with daffodils to the untrained eye. By the end of spring, when they bloom with pretty pink inflorescence, they can reach up to 1.8m (6 feet).
This is a highly recommended plant and if you’re wondering how to cook it, just have a quick look at this recipe from James Martin.
