Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a parasitic fungus growing mainly on birch trees, and it resembles burnt charcoal.
Our chaga has been sustainable foraged by professional foragers in the Scottish Highlands. We dry our chaga in low temperatures to ensure all beneficial components remain unadulterated.
Chaga is not an infinite resource, and both, our foragers and foraging peers, can’t help but noticing that our Scottish chaga resources are in some regions under pressure. This is because chaga is a slow growing mushroom and a victim of its own success (it is considered an important medicinal mushroom but nowadays often used by consumers for any health reason).
We believe that chaga should only be offered to people with serious health problems. As a responsible foraging company, we need to act to protect chaga resources for future generations, therefore we’ve made a decision to sell chaga on a case by case basis.
If you need chaga for health reasons, we can supply you with it. However, you will need to demonstrate to us that you have an ailment justifying the use of chaga. This could be a note from your doctor, herbalist or similar. Please email us at shop@coeursauvage.scot. In your email please state that you commit to using chaga as part of a dual extraction method (hot water and alcohol extraction), not just as tea, which has very limited health benefit.
If you would like chaga but do not have any specific ailments, why not try our “White Chaga”. Our Scottish white chaga is also growing on birch, has similar properties to chaga, and currently has no reported ecological threats.
